Eat that Frog with a Pomodoro
Pomodoro technique is a time management technique which plays with the procrastinators mind by giving them a break of 3–5 minutes in between the tasks. These small breaks alternates the distractions that pops during working on the task.
Steps:
It is 5 step technique which help us to become more productive in the set time. The steps are:
1.Decide the task and set timer for 25 minutes.
2. Start your work until the timer tings.
3. Mark a tick on to do list.
4. Take a five minute break.
5. After the break, get back to work and take 25 minutes after 4 ticks on your tasks list.
Lets try this activity!
Task decided:
I decided to make my assignment in this time which will probably take 2 hours to do. I added an additional step to it by splitting the task into smaller steps according to the 25 minutes time.
Split task 1:
Searching internet for the material required to add in my assignment. I set the timer to 25 minutes and started working. I searched on different websites about the assigned topic for straight 25 minutes. There was no distraction at this time and I took 5 minutes break after the timer’s ting. My mother was calling me. I quickly heard and did what she wanted but it took 10 minutes sadly.
Split task 2:
The second task is to read all the relevant stuff from the PDFs downloaded. I read and make a draft from these PDFs. But when I was reading that, a message popped on my phone screen. That message distracted me a little bit but I focused on my work again. After timer ting, I enjoyed 5 minute break again but this time I replied the messages which were distracting me.
Split task 3 and 4:
I started typing the assignment. It took a little longer because my typing speed is not that good. The only distraction between this time is tiring typing. But still I managed to complete half of this because the time rings again. But here I didn’t took 5 minute break. After setting timer again, I started typing and completed it in next 30 minutes. After completing this task, I am almost done with my original task.
Long break:
Here as mentioned, I took 25 minutes break plus the 5 minutes that I sacrificed later. For this long break I recited Holy Qur’an. This is the best thing you can do during this time.
Last split task:
The only thing left is the proofreading and formatting check. I did it in 15 minutes and emailed the assignment to the teacher.
What change I observed?
Honestly, this method is not new to me. I only learned the term now but I was practicing it my whole life unknowingly. It is not difficult at all but sometimes, the distractions halts the work. These distractions can be fixed by thinking that you are going to have break between the tasks. Splitting the bigger task into the smaller ones can also help in becoming more productive and completing it during the set time. Definitely, I will try it again. I am using it right now while writing the blog and will try it in every task.
